ToggleSolar Power Repair
We do repairs of all solar systems, from Off Grid, Grid Tide, and Hybrid, we also repair backup power systems.
We are accredited electricians with the required certifications and qualifications to ensure that your repair will be completed according to spec. Large-scale commercial and industrial repairs are done effortlessly. Upon completion of a repair we can upon request issue an electrical certificate of compliance.
Our teams are also stocked with some of the more common replacement parts. We always strive to offer our clients a variety of options when considering a repair. We factor in your particular needs and requirements to ensure total client satisfaction. The benefit to our clients is the fact that we only use the best qualified and certified technicians that are not only Green Card certified but also have many years of experience as electrical engineers. The fact that they are salted engineers does not mean that they charge an arm or a leg and are comparatively inexpensive.
We work in teams and can thus quickly deploy more technicians to large-scale repairs with little effort to ensure that a repair project is completed ahead of time to minimize disruptions as we understand time is money.
Small domestic repairs are handled as quickly as possible as we know the frustrations accompanying load shedding. Our teams are friendly and informative and can deal with any possible questions you might have.
Typically, we have found some common issues in Solar Power Systems, and we have put together a list of typical issues we have encountered:
Faulty PV Cable
Your batteries do charge or charge very slowly. In many cases, we have found that the connecting MC4 connectors were not fitted properly and thus causing corrosion resulting in a bad connection. In this case, we will fit a new MC4 connector to solve the issue.
Faulty PV Combiner box and fuse
When the fuse inside the PV Combiner box blows it is a clear sign the inverter could be faulty. The inverter contains an MPPT that distributes the power generated by the PV panels to batteries. When this portion of the Inverter becomes faulty or has a short circuit the fuse inside the PV Combiner box will blow. Our technicians will have a closer look and advice after a careful assessment.
Faulty disconnector switch
We have found in many instances that the DC Disconnector switch has become faulty. Our teams will effortlessly determine the root cause and have it replaced in no time. Some of the cheaper import DC Circuit breakers have been known to have developed issues over time.
Faulty inverter
When your inverter becomes faulty it will most likely first start ripping or switching off. In the event of this happening, it is a good idea to contact us as soon as possible so that we can investigate what the issue is before further damage to the system occurs. Apart from the loss of power, we have seen inverters burning or smoking.
Faulty battery cables
When battery cables or connections become faulty, you will have a loss of power from the battery. In some cases, we have seen that the terminals start oxidating causing resistive connections to the battery, inverter, or the disconnector switch. In cases like this, it is imperative to switch the system off to ensure that the cabling or connections do not heat up, as it will cause further damage.
Incorrectly sized battery cables
When you have an installation done and the battery cables feel warm, it can prove to be a hazardous situation. We have seen houses burnt to the ground as a result of these cables being undersized. We will simply rectify the problem by replacing the cables with the correctly sized cables to ensure the safe operation of your system.
Faulty change-over switch
When your change-over switch becomes faulty, the inverter will still produce power, but it is not supplied to your DB board. In this case, our certified electrician will replace the changeover switch for you.
We do:
Battery replacements
Battery replacements are done on a regular base for various reasons. When you notice your batter behaving in a way it should not like running flat quickly, or the battery bulges or gets swollen, it indicates you need us to do a replacement battery installation for you. In some cases we see corrosion on the battery terminals, similar you would see on car battery terminals. Sometimes, you smell a strong sulphuric acid smell, or even worse the battery starts leaking. At this point, we will step in and install a new battery for you.
Faulty batteries can prove to be harmful not only by exploding but releasing toxic gasses. It is for this reason that when you discover any deformities in the shape of the battery, leakages, or a battery that does not charge anymore have it replaced as soon as possible. This I not a DIY routine as the batteries have to be configured on the inverter. Apart from that fact, it should be correctly sized and also all the batteries have to be the same make and model to ensure no further damage to your system. A battery that no longer charges can harm your charge controller or inverter. So it is not a simple swap out that has to be done.
Inverter replacements
This is the heart of your Solar Power system. So it stands to reason that if this device does not work the way it was intended you will not have power. Various areas of your inverter can become faulty. Some of the typical areas are for example the MPPT. When your MPPT or charge controller becomes faulty, your batteries will not charge anymore. In this case, we will have your inverter repaired. In extreme cases, with grey models coming into South Africa we will simply replace the unit with a nongrey brand. In many instances, we find that the inverter has suffered spike or lightning damage and in some instances, it will be better to replace the unit altogether.
